Raspberry Pi Workshop for beginners

Tue, 5 Mar 2019
10:00 - 14:30

Our famous Raspberry Pi Workshop for Beginners is running again!

Learn the basics of electronics and programming with the Raspberry Pi, a clever one-board working computer, available for less than $50!

This workshop will take you through the basics of programming with the Python programming language, and how to use those programs to control real circuits. Completing this course will introduce you to skills needed for home automation, Internet-Of-Things (IoT), robotics, software development, and more future technologies.

This is a beginners course - we assume no previous knowledge of programming or electronics. If you do, however, we have some more difficult things you can do to extend the learning, but the focus will be on beginners.

Topics covered:

  • Setting up the Raspberry Pi with Raspbian
  • Basic Linux commands to get started
  • Running Python programs
  • The Raspberry Pi interface
  • Controlling electronics with GPIO pins
  • Running a separate screen for custom output
  • Running servo motors (good for robots!)
  • Next steps you can take and ideas

Note this course is during the day, ideal for those working night shift, stay at home parents, and others who can't make the time at night or the weekend. If you can't make this time but are interested, please let us know via email and we can run the workshop again at another time.

Those that do make the workshop are also welcome to stay around afterwards to continue developing. Our normal opening hours are from 4pm, but we will keep the space open from the closing time of this workshop onwards until our normal close (9pm).

Important notes! Please read these before you purchase.

  • Kids above 12 years old are welcome, but must be with a parent or guardian during the course. If you are looking after a child younger and need to bring them, please contact us - we may be able to work something out, but there are important safety considerations we need to discuss.
  • We will provide all the necessary equipment to do this course, including a Pi for use.
  • To keep the course cost down, in this course you will not be able to take the Raspberry Pi home with you, but we will give you the electronics used. You can purchase the Pi off us after the course - just let us know, or get your own elsewhere (we have a few websites we like to use, let us know if you).
  • You must register an account on our TidyHQ system as a member, and accept the waiver. You do not need to pay an additional membership to do this course though - you just need the account.
  • You can bring a friend (one!) with you and work together. Get one ticket, but please let us know you are bringing someone, so we can ensure enough seats are available.
  • No lunch is provided, but we have kitchen factilities and will take a half-hour break at 12.30pm. Coffee and Tea is available free, and soft drink cans for $1.
